Centre for Advanced Study Sofia beurs voor Miglena Dikova-Milanova (LW21)

Centre for Advanced Study Sofia fellowship for Miglena Dikova-Milanova
Miglena Dikova-Milanova has been awarded a fellowship at the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS Sofia) for the 2026-2027 academic year, as part of a programme supporting Bulgarian scholars in the academic diaspora.
Her research project, Embodied Testimony: The Body as an Archive of Trauma in Contemporary Southeast European Women’s Literature, explores how contemporary women writers represent the body as a bearer of memory, trauma, and resistance. The project focuses on the works of Bulgarian authors Rene Karabash and Yoanna Elmy, placing their writing within the broader context of post-socialist transformation and current debates surrounding gender, identity, violence, and historical memory in Southeast Europe.
The study approaches the body not only as the site of personal suffering, but also as an archive preserving the traces of political and social history. Literary representations of bodily experience thus become forms of embodied testimony, revealing what often remains unspoken in official histories and public narratives.
The project examines how the female body functions as an archive of individual and collective trauma in contemporary literature. It analyses how women writers challenge dominant narratives of gender, nationalism, and post-socialist society. It also situates Bulgarian literary works within a wider Southeast European and European framework, including a dialogue with the work of Lea Ypi.
The fellowship will support the development of academic publications, new teaching materials, and a course module on women’s writing, cultural memory, and resistance. The research also connects with the UGent-coordinated ENLIGHT project Subversive Voices: Women, Identity, and Resistance in East European and Baltic Literature and Culture.
