Call for applications: The Brueghel Professorship at the University of Pennsylvania

The Brueghel Professorship at the University of Pennsylvania is a semester-long guest appointment awarded annually to a post-doc or assistant professor from one of the five Flemish universities on a rotating basis.

The University of Pennsylvania is an ivy-league university founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1751, located in Philadelphia. The Professorship is administered by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at U Penn. The Department seeks energetic and intellectually agile candidates from a variety of fields who are able to offer courses on aspects of Flemish and Dutch culture (arts, history, language, literature, society) in a comparative context. Of particular interest to U Penn are candidates whose research engages in one or more of the following interdisciplinary fields: medieval and early modern; word and image studies (including comics and graphic novel); Jewish studies; refugees and migration; environmental humanities; cinema and media; digital humanities; the idea of Europe and the EU; cultural histories of WWI; Europe under Nazi occupation; gender studies; history of the material text; translation, multilingualism and language politics. Candidates may want to explore some of U Penn’s many interdisciplinary centers, institutes and faculty seminars:

Expectations: The Brueghel Professor offers two courses, typically one at the undergraduate and one at the graduate level. The Department arranges for the courses to be crosslisted with appropriate departments and programs and consults with the Brueghel Professor to ensure a good fit with the curriculum and to optimal interdisciplinary enrollment. The Brueghel Professor should be prepared to take advantage of the many opportunities Penn offers and to establish and deepen his/her North American academic network. The Brueghel Professor holds one public lecture and co-organizes a colloquium on a topic of his/her choice in consultation with Penn colleagues. The Bruegel Professor coordinates publicity for events with the Flanders House in New York City. U Penn provides outstanding research facilities.

Applicants should provide:
1) a cover letter explaining interest
2) brief CV (3 pages)
3) brief descriptions of 2-3 proposed courses
4) title and abstract for a public lecture
5) title and abstract for a colloquium and any other project that would contribute to increasing the visibility of the Brueghel Professorship.

Applications should be sent by email to Professor Simon Richter (srichter@sas.upenn.edu) by 12 June 2017.
