Down the Rabbit Hole: Voorleesmarathon aan de UGent rond de kinderlijke verbeelding

Naar aanleiding van de 125ste verjaardag van de dood van Lewis Carroll organiseert de creative writing-studentenvereniging Prometheus in samenwerking met de afdeling Engelse Letterkunde van de Universiteit Gent de voorleesmarathon Down the Rabbit Hole rond de wonderbaarlijke wereld van kinderlijke verbeelding. De kinderlijke fantasie is een bodemloze bron van creativiteit, die de kracht heeft om nieuwe werelden te scheppen. Die werelden zijn te vinden binnenin een kleerkast of in een konijnenhol, maar zijn altijd een reflectie van de openheid en speelsheid van het kinderlijke denken.

Op dinsdag 25 april 2023, van 9 u. tot 21 u., zullen de meest tot de verbeelding sprekende passages uit de werken van Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland), C. S. Lewis (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), L. Frank Baum (The Wizard of Oz), A. A. Milne (Winnie-the-Pooh) en T. J. Klune (The House in the Cerulean Sea) in het Engels worden voorgelezen in de “Humanities Wunderkammer”, de pas geopende lounge op de gelijkvloerse verdieping van vleugel Loveling in de Faculteitsbibliotheek Letteren en Wijsbegeerte (Rozier 44, 9000 Gent).

Tal van professoren, onderzoekers, studenten en andere literatuurliefhebbers nemen elk een slot van 15 minuten voor hun rekening. We verwachten ook verschillende bekende namen, zoals Gita Deneckere, de decaan van de faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte (die de voorleesmarathon zal aftrappen om 9 u.), en Dimitri Balcaen, schrijver van de boekenreeks Zusters van het Atoom (die om 9.30 u. zal aantreden). Er wordt ook allerlei randanimatie voorzien. Ontdek in welke droomwereld jij thuishoort door de quiz in the vullen. Speel een spel met al dan niet levende speelkaarten en schaakstukken. Voor de jongsten onder ons zijn er ook kleurplaten. Daarnaast kunnen bezoekers genieten van een kopje koffie of thee (verzorgd door de Gekke Hoedenmaker) en smullen van een gevarieerd aanbod aan zoetigheden en gebak, van koekjes waar je 20 meter groter van wordt tot het mysterieuze Turks fruit van de Witte Heks.

De voorleesmarathon Down the Rabbit Hole is vrij toegankelijk voor alle belangstellenden, jong of oud, UGent’er of niet-UGent’er. Spring gerust even binnen in de loop van de dag, verdwaal in de pracht en praal van Wonderland, en blijf luisteren zo lang of zo kort als je wil. Kan je niet fysiek aanwezig zijn? To mark the 125th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s death, the creative writing student club Prometheus, in collaboration with the English Literature section of Ghent University, is organizing the reading marathon Down the Rabbit Hole around the wonderful world of childlike imagination. The fantasy of children is a bottomless well of creativity, which has the power to create new worlds. Those worlds can be found inside a closet or down a rabbit hole, but are always a reflection of the openness and playfulness of childlike thinking.

On Tuesday 25 April 2023, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the most imaginative passages from the works of Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland), C. S. Lewis (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), L. Frank Baum (The Wizard of Oz), A. A. Milne (Winnie-the-Pooh), and T. J. Klune (The House in the Cerulean Sea) will be read aloud in English in the “Humanities Wunderkammer”, the newly opened lounge on the ground floor of the Loveling wing in the Faculty Library of Arts and Philosophy (Rozier 44, 9000 Gent).

Numerous professors, researchers, students, and other literature enthusiasts will each read for 15 minutes. We will also welcome several big names, including Gita Deneckere, the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy (who will kick off the reading marathon at 9 a.m.), and Dimitri Balcaen, the author of the Zusters van het Atoom book series (who will join us at 9.30 a.m.). Other celebrities will be announced at a later time. If you would like to read yourself, please sign up by putting your name next to an available timeslot in this spreadsheet. There will also be a wide range of side activities. Find out which dream world you belong in by taking the quiz. Play a game with living or non-living playing cards and chess pieces. For the youngest among us, there will also be colouring pages. In addition, visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea (provided by the Mad Hatter) and taste a variety of sweets and cakes, from cookies that will make you grow 20 metres taller to the White Witch’s mysterious Turkish delights.

The Down the Rabbit Hole reading marathon is free and open to anyone interested, whether young or old, UGentian or not. Feel free to drop by anytime during the day, get lost in the splendour of Wonderland, and stay for as long or as short as you like. Can’t attend in person?
